If your staff (teaching or support) heard offensive language in a corridor or classroom, would they tackle? For example, students casually using the word ‘gay’ to mean useless or rubbish, or students using the word ‘chav’, as a means of abuse?
The Equality Challenge Unit has published ideas of how to provide effective support for all students whatever their protected characteristics or backgrounds. How does your practice shape up?
The Nobel Peace Prize winner died at the age of 95 in December in his home in Johannesburg. He will be remembered for his great generosity of spirit, his tireless perseverance for justice and equality, and his powerful message of reconciliation. In one of his many famous speeches, he said ‘to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others’.
How do you embed E&D in apprenticeship programmes when the learner spends most or all of their time in the place of employment? How do you avoid a ‘tick box approach’ to E&D for progress reviews or assessment visits? How can you genuinely and meaningfully raise awareness of E&D with learners and with employers? Did you know that the AoC is running a national event in Birmingham on 28 November that answers these and other questions on E&D and work-based learning?
