Tackling prejudice-based bullying

Did you know that 54% of young people have been bullied at some point during their time at school or college? What are the experiences of your students? Would a new resource help you to evaluate your practice?
In June 2018, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) published a resource to help tackle prejudice-based bullying.
This resource aims to help education providers to identify and prevent all forms of prejudice-based bullying; direct physical or verbal bullying, indirect or cyber-bullying based on the protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender
- Gender reassignment
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sexual orientation
Although written primarily for schools, colleges and other education and training -providers should find this a useful resource. It covers, for example:
- How to create an open culture and ethos
- Different ways for students and staff to report incidents
- Various ways that bullying and harassment incidents can be reported, recorded and reviewed
- How to communicate anti-bullying messages
- How to analyse data
There are accompanying checklist questions in the resource which you can use to evaluate against your own practice to help identify actions for improvement
You can download the resource here
The EHRC also published an accompanying ‘tips’ fact sheet, which youu can download here
